Health Effects of Evolving Aerosols

Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL)

The Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL), located at Vancouver General Hospital, is aiming to improve our understanding of air pollution induced lung pathophysiology, in the context of changes in ambient aerosols due to climate and new technologies. This world-class facility is equipped with real-time gas and particulate monitoring equipment as well as various pollution generating and aging systems (including woodsmoke and diesel exhaust), enabling a wide range of real-world exposure test conditions. This facility’s primary focus is the study of controlled human exposure to diluted diesel exhaust, but is also equipped to conduct in-vivo studies with the CULTEX system. The system allows safe and ethical study of the whole organism or cellular models to combustion products under various conditions of atmospheric aging, load, and particle depletion.
